This game cinematic for JOLT employs a range of animation, design and illustration techniques to create an enticing trailer filled with vibrant background illustrations and cell-animated 2D FX. Starting with a blank page, we first undertook character and environment concept design, before deciding on illustrating the background, and building the characters in 3D.
The parallax camera movement combined with jump cuts creates the illusion of movement and motion, without actually requiring expensive and time consuming character animation. Meanwhile we manoeuvred the 3D characters into different action poses which allowed our 2D team to cell animate silky smooth 2D FX for maximum drama as the hero and villain face off. The town square background is beautifully illustrated whilst also employing desaturated colour tones so as to enhance the contrast with the the vibrant 2D FX, a technique which draws maximum attention to the characters' special skills and weapons.
