While few of us at Jumbla are great at steering 4WDs, we had no hesitation steering an animated one! This title sequence was made for the TV series 4WD Touring Australia. The program was created by journalist and photographer Carlisle Rogers, who also founded 4WD Touring Australia Magazine. Both are devoted to the pursuit of “living the dream” – exploring the best Aussie destinations, and encouraging people to get out there!
Jumbla Creative Director Callan Woolcock said we had a lot of licence when it came to the execution of this sequence. “The music was supplied, as the show commissioned its own professionally mixed sound clip. So, it was up to us to decide what would visually accommodate this modern, upbeat folk tune.”
“We wanted something that was smooth from start to finish, so we came up with a plan to pull the 'camera' back perpetually,” he said.
“We realised that blending 2D and 3D techniques – so using what we call 2.5D – was our best bet. That basically involves having the camera travel through a 3-dimensional landscape, in which all the objects are 2-dimensional paper cut-outs. The exception is the 4WD itself, which is 3D – we animated that using Element, in After Effects.
“It means the title sequence consistently travels, which ties into the ‘on the run’ theme of this show.”
