The Future Has Arrived At Jumbla

Oct 19, 2016

Welcome to the future – Jumbla will be your guide! We’re pretty excited about this one, as this video showcases an actual hologram. Not an animation of one – but a real life, actual hologram.

We completed this video for The Heat Group, the Australian makeup distributor for such global beauty brands as Max Factor, Covergirl and Warner Bros. Consumer Products. The video was made for the launch of the “Ready to Glow” collection into stores nationwide and was sent to out to customers and media in order to build excitement.

The Heat Group wanted something innovative and special to celebrate the launch Ulta3’s Ready to Glow collection, and they wanted to create excitement in the beauty product industry. They were inspired specifically by the ‘light and dark’ contrast of the Strobing Kit – a cheekbone highlighting product part of the new Ulta3 collection – and wanted to communicate this look in their promotion for the campaign. So, the idea for a hologram was born.

The Heat Group came to us with a brief – they wanted their hologram to feature exciting nightlife imagery. Then we took care of the rest.

The hologram takes the viewer through a girl’s night out – blowdrying your hair, putting on your lippy, mascara and heels, then heading out in a limo for a cocktail or two – and ends with a bang on a fluorescent animation of Elyse Knowles, the face of Ultra3. You can even detect a reference to the original inspiration – in the animation, Elyse’s cheekbones are almost luminescent, recalling The Heat Group’s inspiration from Ulta3’s Strobing Kit!

We animated the material for the hologram itself, then replicated it four times so it would reflect off the plastic hologram viewer to create the 3D image.

‘It was the first project that I worked on all the way through the process… Storyboarding, style framing and animating,’ recalls Jess, one of Jumbla’s animators. ‘I only had three days to complete everything – including two days of animation in total. So it was fun and playful, but a bit stressful too, because I had never made an animation with such little time at Jumbla before! But I felt great finishing it.

‘To make sure the actually hologram actually worked, Natalie (the producer on this project) and I made a hologram pyramid out of plastic from a dumpling container! That’s how we watched it for the first time.’
