Merry Christmas from Jumbla!

Dec 23, 2016

It’s that time of year again. You know… when Love Actually gets played and everyone cries, the Queen speaks slowly on TV and Mariah Carey collects her royalties from the re-charting of her 1994 festive single.

Frankly, we at Jumbla love celebrating Christmas. We’re big on staff KK (but the evil version where you get to steal each other’s presents, causing everyone to hate each other by the end), blasting Christmas tunes and decorating the studio with a giant tree and lots of tinsel.

It’s also great for looking back on how far we’ve come as a studio in the past 12 months. Here are some of the highlights.

We Turned 5!

That’s right… we’re old enough to go to school now! Starting as a team of just two (Andy and Cal) back in 2011, we’re now a team of over 20 full-time animators, in addition to our team of producers in Melbourne and London.

Exciting Clients

We had the great privilege of working with some incredible clients, such as the cyclist Chris Froome. We created a video for his sponsor Rhinomed, promoting his campaign to claim a third Tour de France victory.

Titled “y3llow”, the video uses audio narration (which we recorded with the cyclist when he was in Melbourne) that explains the significance of a particular colour to Froome – you can probably guess which.

The video was shared on the champion’s social media pages, and we’re thrilled to say he did indeed go on to win that third Tour de France title (we would take credit for that… if we could).

Riot Games is a company we’re thrilled to continue collaborating with – after all, they’re the makers of the world’s most played online game League of Legends (no biggie).

We’ve had a blast producing work for this epic company in previous years, liaising with the Oceanic branch and its “e-sports” division. This year we were delighted to take that partnership one step further – producing content in liaison with the global headquarters of Riot, in Los Angeles.

The video, a tease for the game’s latest “champion”, was viewed by over 10 million people across YouTube and Facebook!

We couldn’t possibly name all the great clients we were lucky to work with this year, but among them are the likes of Microsoft, Toyota and Telstra – as well as various state and federal government departments.

Big Accolades

It was a big year for awards at Jumbla, with gongs from the Horizon Interactive Awards, the Muse Awards and the Australian Video Producers Association.

Perhaps our most humbling accolade was being named an Honouree at the Webby Awards. This event is globally regarded as the “Oscars of the Internet”.

The piece that received this high honour was one we created for YGAP’s Polished Man fundraising campaign, which encourages men to paint one fingernail blue in support of efforts to end violence against children.

Jumbla Academy Kicks Off

We at Jumbla want to do as much as we can to contribute to the incredible animation industry. 2016 saw us fulfill our dream of contributing to Australia’s talent pool of animators and designers, with the arrival of our brand new course: Jumbla Academy. It’s designed to bridge the gap between tertiary study and “real world” animation environments.

Two cohorts of students graduated from the course, held at our Melbourne studio under the guidance of experienced animators. Some of those graduates have stayed on as interns, where they’re currently assisting us with our charity projects!

Awesome Arrivals

In addition to Cornel – our new creative manager sent to us express all the way from Germany – Jumbla this year also welcomed three new animators (two of them former interns) and two producers.

They’re our official Jumblers, but we also are thrilled to embrace two “honourary” Jumblers. Cornel’s wife gave birth to a gorgeous girl named Ronya 10 weeks ago (who will soon be speaking with an Aussie accent, in addition to German at home – how cool is that).

Just a week after her arrival, our founding creative director Cal had a beautiful bouncing bubba boy – Riley. We’ve already scheduled play dates for them.

2017 promises to be a big year ahead with lots of cool projects already under way. From everyone at Jumbla, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and all the best for the coming year!
