In-Game Cinematics

In-game cinematics (aka ‘cutscenes’) can serve various purposes, but are mainly used as a narrative device - moving the plot forward, showcasing character development, or highlighting thematic details.

Here at Jumbla, we combine our experience and expertise of motion design, film production, and video games to create compelling cinematic cutscenes.

“Our in-game cinematics use a combination of 2D and 3D with a focus on really nicely designed visuals,” Jumbla’s Creative Director Callan Woolcock said.

Benefits of in-game cinematics

  • Establish narrative, character development, and highlight thematic details

  • Keep players hooked with visually-rich sequences

  • Promote the download of additional content

The anatomy of in-game cinematics

In addition to gripping gameplay and graphics, video games now speak the language of film. In-game cinematics strengthen player involvement and evoke an emotional response.

It’s crucial that cinematics merge seamlessly with the game’s actual content to maintain high standards of quality and consistency.

The team at Jumbla pay close attention to the aesthetics and dynamics of every video game they work on. It’s this level of attentiveness that sets us apart.

An emphasis on beautiful design

“What we’ve been asked to do in the past, which the team get really excited about, is design-based cinematics,” Callan said.

“For example, we’ve done 2D motion graphic-based cinematics that feature 3D elements but with a big emphasis on captivating design.”

Our work for the NASCAR expansion of Forza 6 Motorsport is a prime example. By interspersing highly-detailed vehicles with free-flowing cameras and quick transitions, gamers feel they have no choice than to purchase the downloadable content.

“There’s a lot graphic design elements in there, like when the cars and text appear against white space,” added Callan. “But it works perfectly and we’re really proud of this cinematic.”
