## What is 2D animation?

2D animation takes illustrations of various elements such as characters or objects, and moves them around in a two-dimensional environment.

The action can go in any direction but doesn’t appear to move towards or away from the audience.

Traditionally, 2D animation was hand-drawn onto ‘cels’ and then photographed one at a time - an extremely time-consuming process.

Today, most 2D animation is created on a computer using cutting-edge software. Not only does this speed up the process - it also opens up new and novel possibilities.

## Why choose 2D animation?

2D animation is extremely versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, from product explainers to television commercials and event graphics.

It offers a level of artistic freedom that can be difficult to replicate with 3D software. Many 2D animation projects are hand-drawn or custom illustrated.

Given its simplistic style, 2D animation is particularly good for communicating story-driven projects that feature people or characters. We find these are often used to demonstrate a customer’s journey.

It can also feel less ‘digital’ than 3D animation, producing a more natural feel.
